about
A song of the overwhelming guilt that leads to madness. I suspect this not a pop song.
The scenario is modelled on the fate of Maglor, from Tolkein's “Silmarillion”. Maglor, second son of Feanor, though he has acted under a geas to his father, yields to the "everlasting darkness", having understood that the recovery of the Silmarils did not justify the inhumane actions taken to acquire them. Some say that even as late as the War of the Rings he lived still, in madness, on the shores of the island “Himling” tended by a few faithful followers.
The “wolves”, of course are the memories of what he has done, and the “wall” is the emotional and mental barrier he has erected to protect himself from them.
lyrics
Lyrics:
there are wolves at the door, wolves at the door and they want in
they whisper and they lie that they can absolve me from my sin
I was cold outside, cold outside and quite insane
I was lost outside, lost in a place where madness reigns
it is quiet here inside, dry inside, dry and warm
a fire burns within, there is light, and shelter from the storm
it is cold outside, cold outside and quite insane
while I am inside, I’m safe from the wind and rain
we are all secure behind our wall
safe and sound in our sanctuary
there are wolves at the door, wolves at the door and they want in
they scratch at the door and I do not think they are my friends
it is cold outside, cold outside and quite insane
let them growl outside, howl in the wind and rain
we are all secure behind our wall
safe and sound in our sanctuary
there are wolves at the door, wolves at the door and they want in
I do not understand, do not understand what was my sin
but there is blood on my hands, blood I cannot wash away
and guilt rules the night, guilt rules the night and haunts the day
in my sanctuary
