about

14 semi-quavers to the bar – hence the name of the song.
When writing in an unusual time signature (that is: not 4:4 or 3:4 or a multiple thereof) one of my main aims is to make the rhythm flow smoothly – not always an easy task in the western popular/folk/rock musical idiom. This was one of my earliest successes (at least in my mind). The lyrics, of course, are far from cheerful, which makes it one attitude short of a popular song.

lyrics

let’s find a place where we can dance
an exotic beat to get us up and prancing
where life is fast, the food and wine is first class
let’s give forgetfulness a chance
‘cause overseas, all you hear are children crying
and on their knees, millions cry for sanctuary, sanctuary

put on your dancing shoes let’s walk
it’s not the time or place for thought or talking
let’s have some fun, ignore the rising sun
pick up the beat and laugh a lot
but something’s wrong, I cannot keep this beat together
the moment’s gone, I’m two semi-quavers short of a popular song
